This position is responsible for high-impact software development and application architecture. Chief amongst our priorities is to create a simplified, forward-looking, and scalable experience that will enable DoSomething to exist where young people reside – in rapidly-evolving digital social spaces.
The role in a nutshell:
In your role, you will join collaborative, productive, and enthusiastic engineers working with Laravel, Node, React, and GraphQL delivered through Heroku and AWS. Our data space is Postgres, with MySQL and MongoDB in the mix.
How we work:
- All of our code is open source and on GitHub. We work with GH Issues and pull requests. Every PR is peer-reviewed
- We deploy often. We do it through Heroku. We continuously integrate with CircleCI. We host in AWS and Heroku
- We maintain quality with the unit and functional testing, but we’re constantly trying to find better ways to test. We monitor with New Relic, StatHat, Runscope, Papertrail, and Ghost Inspector
- We're always looking for better ways to work and end each sprint with a retrospective
Skills & Qualifications:
- 4+ years on production web applications
- 4+ years working on teams of developers
- Laravel: It's our core web platform. You know its innards, and you've built real projects with it. You’ve had your hands dirty with production support, scaling concerns, caching strategies, battles with features, standing up Services, and custom module development. You use your Laravel experience to architect systems that take advantage of Laravel’s strengths and minimize its weaknesses
- Programming: You're very familiar with PHP and React (with Node as a bonus!). You can name some design patterns off the top of your head and discuss when and where you’ve used them. You’ve built a RESTful API endpoint. You recognize and advocate for a clean code
- Architecture: You’ve worked in larger systems and built or integrated them into event-driven architectures. You know when a queue is a helpful mechanism. You can set a team towards a solution by proposing a practical approach and delegating
- Open source: You have some exciting things on GitHub or similar. Or maybe you’ve spent your career in agencies on private repositories, but you use open-source tools whenever you can and have contributed back
- Causiness (not a word): You believe in DoSomething.org and the power of young people. You want a great tech career, and part of that means knowing that your work contributes to the greater good. You’re not satisfied with using your powers to get more people to click on a button or increase ad revenue
- You are proficient with engineering tools and applications such as AWS, AWS Lambda, Heroku, Terraform, React.js, Node, MongoDB, MySQL, Laravel/PHP, and GraphQ
